In reply to Metallurg Magnitgorsk 4 goals on 7 shots? What happened? posted by Christophe Boullion on 01 December 1999 at 05:20 GMT:
Here are the official releases from the IIHF:
The EHL Champions Metallurg Magnitogorsk erected a defensive barricade and scored on 4 of the 7 shots they made on Vsetin’s goal to advance to the EHL Semi-final Round. Metallurg registered only 1 shot in the first period, 4 in the second and 2 in the third period, while Vsetin had a total of 42. Ukrainian goalie Igor Karpenko made his debut with Metallurg stopping 39, including 20 in the final period when Vsetin desperately tried to beat him. But his defensive wall proved to be impenetrable and Valeri Karpov and Andrei Koudinov goals 43 seconds apart in the third period were all the EHL Champions needed to trail from 3-2 to 3-4 and secure their presence in the EHL Semi-final Round. "We complicated our position in the Division after our home loss to Villach - said after the game coach Valeri Beloussov, - and I am happy that we have saved the situation winning here in Vsetin in our last playing day. It was a tough game, we entered it without six key players and Vsetin put us under enormous pressure". Vsetin opened the score mid in the first period with Zbynek Marak, then after Metallurg’s answer in the central session through the goals of Oleg Leontiev and Serguei Gomoliako, grabbed a 3-2 lead scoring twice in a 1:18 minute span with Roman Stantien and Radim Kucharczyk. But the team effort was not enough for the Czech champions, who suffered their sixth loss of the season. "The whole team wanted to put a big effort on the ice, and in the end we only lost by a mere one goal difference - says Vsetin’s assistant coach Miroslav Venkrbec. - But we tried hard throughout the entire game, it just did not work the way we wanted".
Win is not enough, Villach finish eliminated
Metallurg’s win made Villach’s effort in vain, as the Austrian champions finished third in the Division A despite their 3-1 triumph over Slovakian Slovan Bratislava. "Unfortunately we were not the masters of our own destiny and after we heard that Metallurg had won their game we knew that our EHL participation was over - says Villach’s coach Ron Kennedy. - But despite our early elimination we are extremely satisfied with our EHL participation, as we proved that we can compete with the best European clubs and we have obtained much more than everybody had expected from us at the start of the season". As for Slovan Bratislava, coach Frantisek Hossa is not too disappointed for the loss. "We were already qualified for the EHL Semi-final Round and so we did not play with the same intensity we have done normally. But nevertheless we played a good game and their goalie was really outstanding. Now we have one month to concentrate on our next EHL game and we will prepare at our best, as we want to advance to the EHL Top Four Final".
Vahalahti’s two goals snap MoDo’s winning streak
Ville Vahalahti scored his second goal of the night 21 seconds into the third period and goalie Fredrik Norrena stopped all but 1 of the 16 shots he faced, as TPS Turku snapped MoDo’s EHL winning streak, skating to a 2-1 win at Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. The loss did not put in danger MoDo’s lead in the Division C, as Turku finished the Division Round with 14 points, 1 less than the Swedish club. With both teams already qualified for the Semi-final Round, both coaches made more space to the youngest players and the game turned out to be not as spectacular as it might have been. But Per Bäckman, coach of MoDo Hockey, is nevertheless satisfied with the outcome of the game: "Even if we lost, I have got the results I was interested in. I wanted to test some of our young players, let them play as much as possible and now I know with which players I can keep working on in the future". One of them could be guest player Jens Öhman: "This was a good opportunity for me to play at a high level. I know that to play in the EHL I would need a few weeks of hard training, but it was fun and I look forward to play again in the League". Also Hannu Virta, TPS’ assistant coach was satisfied with the final result: "It was good to test all our young players and see what they could do. Playing so well after a terrible flight to Örnsköldsvik, in snowy and windy conditions was something I would not have dreamt of. I also hope that both MoDo Hockey and us are able to reach the gold medal game in the EHL. I am sure it would be a great final between two very good teams".
Valerenga shutouts Mannheim to confirm third
The German champions of Adler Mannheim ended their EHL participation in the same way as it started, with a loss to Valerenga IF. Only, this time it hurt much more, as the Norwegian champions outskated, outplayed and outscored Mannheim, who was shut out for the second time in 6 games. "This was just not our EHL season, it was a nightmare and I am glad it’s over" says Mannheim’s coach Chris Valentine. Ake Lilljeborn stopped all the 22 shots he faced and Rune Fjeldstad scored the game winner 4:43 into the game as Valerenga confirmed their third place in the ranking. "With some more luck we could have finished with more points and probably we could have fought for a place in the playoffs, but this is the way sport is and we do not complain - says Valerenga’s coach Roy Johansen. - We won two games and were very close to win with MoDo and TPS when we played them home, which means we have a team which is competitive in Europe. And soon our day will come".
