What do Europeans think of Canadian hockey?

Is it true that the concensus in the European sports media is that Canadian hockey players are nothing but a bunch of goons?
I ask this question in light of the recent Marty McSorely stick swinging incident in which he knocked Donald Brashear out with a vicious stick to the head. I know that it made the sports headlines in some European countries. I fear that it is going to give North American hockey a bad reputation. That's if it didn't already have one.
