Sounds very much like the situation in the Netherlands, however the loss of a weekend can easily be solved by leaving some 'international weekends' open in the schedule.
After all the team's won't lose income as there's a set number of league games to be played. As in professional football the European governing body, the IIHF, has set some 'international dates' meant for national team games. Usually in those weekends there's no league play at all. EIHC tournaments are on that 'national team games-list.
So the teams won't lose anything on income at all.
