The first game of ice hockey as the sport we recognise today was in fact played in Canada. The first game played in the UK was at played at Buckingham Palace in in 1895 between Lord Stanley's sons and a team with two future kings, Edward VII and George VI.
There is record of the game being played before that in the UK, but it is now generally accepted that they were playing a game more like bandy than ice hockey.
Ice hockey was first played in the mid-1800s in Canada, with the first set of rules published in 1877 by a Montreal newspaper.
