New coach Krikunov names Russia’s long-WC list

Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Kovalev, Datsiuk and young Malkin will lead Russia's offence in Austria 2005.

Alexander Krikunov, who led Belarus to the stunning upset against Sweden in the Olympic quarterfinal in Salt Lake City 2002, has announced his first training-camp roster for the 2005 IIHF World Championship as head coach of Team Russia. Krikunov has named six players from his club team Dynamo Moscow, who won the Russian national title last week.

The roster has a great offensive upside with forwards Aleksandr Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Aleksei Kovalev, Pavel Datsiuk, Maksim Afinogenov, Aleksei Yashin, Viktor Kozlov and young prospect Evgeny Malkin.

The defence will be led by Dynamo Moscow's Andrei Markov and possibly Darius Kasparaitis (AK Bars Kazan), who is officially not on the roster, but may be added later. Also Avangard Omsk's forward Aleksandr Perezhogin is among the group of players nursing injuries and who may be added to the final World Championships roster.
