Bronze medals to Russia

A good first period wins the medals for Russia. USA were beaten 4-2 in the bronze medal game.

USA played 8 minutes on the power-play in the first period but Russia were able to come out for the second with a 3-0 lead. Nikita Filatov made it 4-0 early in the second period and the game was basically already won.

After the first period USA switched goalies. Joe Palmer entered instead of Jeremy Smith, and he got the worst possible start when he allowed 4-0 after only 1.30.

Rhett Rahkshani scored a beautiful goal in the middle of the second period and Jordan Schroeder made it 4-2 with a little more than 6 minutes remaining of the game but USA were never really close to threaten the Russian lead.

Aleksei Cherepanov opened the scoring 4 minutes into the game when he shot the puck under American netminder Jeremy Smith with a backhander.

Smith had some bad luck on the second goal. Evgeny Kurbatov’s shot just crossed the goal line behind him.

Nikita Filatov made it 3-0 on a great pass by Alexei Cherepanov. “I have played together with Cherepanov for three weeks now and this was our best game”, says Filatov.

Young Filatov (1990) of CSKA Moscow added his second goal of the game when he made it 4-0 at 21:30. “I am very happy. This is one of the happiest moments of my life”, said Filatov after the Bronze medal game.

Rhett Rakhshani and Jordin Schroeder scored to give America some hope but their top scorer of this tournament James van Riemsdyk left the ice without scoring any points today.

“We really wanted to come home with the medals but we got off our game plan”, explained van Riemsdyk today’s loss.

Just after the 4-2 goal USA had a couple of more good chances to score but Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky didn’t allow any more goals. Some late American penalties definitely ruined their chances to come back.

Russian top player Alexei Cherepanov was happy after the game. “Medals are always a good result”, said Cherepanov after the game.”It was pretty tough to play today after the loss yesterday but we came out and played our game.”
