Russia wins WJC opener

40 saves by Enkuzens not enough for Latvia.

As expected Russia defeated Latvia in the WJC opener in Ottawa, Canada. But the Russian had to fight hard for the win and despite 44 shots on goal the Russians only scored four goals and won 4-1.

Despite outshoting Latvia 21-8 in the first period it took until 16:56 when Vyacheslav Voinov scored the first goal of the tournament on a power play. Pavel Chernov doubled the lead halfway through the game before Maksim Goncharov killed the game with 3-0 at 47:01.

Janis Ozolins put Latvia on the score board with less than two minutes to play which pleased most of the 9,441 spectators. An impressive attendance as usual when the WJC is played in Canada. The Latvian goalie Nauris Enzukens kept the numbers down and was given the man of the match award, Sergei Andronov got the honour for Russia.
