Slovakia wins key game in their WJC opener

Latvia defeated 7-2 in Civic Centre.

Slovakia entered the World Juniors on Saturday with a 7-2 win against Latvia. Latvia had played Russia on Friday losing 4-1. The win was crucial for Slovakia as these two teams are predicted to finish at the bottom of Group B to fight to avoid relegation from the Elite division.

Latvia had a 2-1 lead in the first period but then it was all about Slovakia who scored six unanswered goals. In the second period Slovakia outshot Latvia 16-0!

Ondrej Rusnak and Radoslav Tybor scored two goals each. Adam Bezak, Tomas Tatar and Marek Hrivik also managed to beat Latvian goaltender Nauris Enkuzens. The Slovak netminder Jaroslav Janus made 15 saves but allowed goals by Ronalds Cinks and Janis Straupe.
