Croatian surprise in Logrono
Croatia wins the 2009 IIHF World U20 Championships Div. II Group B
Having being relegated from U20 division 1 last year Great Britain were favorites to win the Division II Group B, played in Spain. But already on first day Croatia defeated the Brits 3-2 and when the Croats went on by defeating the Netherlands and Spain also by a one goal margin they were almost certain winners of the group.
Croatia finished the week with easy wins against China and Mexico. Five straight wins for Croatia means promotion to divsion I next year. China who was a late replacement team for New Zealand was pointless and is relegated to division III. The UK won the silver after a 5-4 win against the Dutch team on final day while Mexico a bit surprisingly finished in fourth place after beating the hosts 3-1.
The directorate awards were given to:
Best goalkeeper: Ander Alcaine, Spain
Best defender: Stephen Lee, Great Britain
Best forward: Dominik Kanaet, Croatia
