Bitter end for the 2009 World Championship host
Hainsey sends Switzerland out of the tournament.
Switzerland needed three points against USA in the last game of the Qualifying Round to make it to the Quarter finals but the game ended 3-3 after 60 minutes. Roman Wick scored a game-winning goal in over-time, but two points weren’t enough for the Swiss team. The host is out of the tournament and because of this result Latvia are through to the next stage.
Andres Ambühl opened the scoring in the tenth minute when Switzerland had a 2-man advantage. The second period saw 4 goals. Ron Hainsey tied it on a power-play after 6 minutes but Romano Lemm gave the home team the lead back five minutes later. At 35:08 USA tied the game again when Chris Higgins beat Martin Gerber. 12 seconds before the end of the middle act Ron Hainsey scored his second goal of the game to take USA to the lead for the first time of the game.
Martin Plüss tied the game again in the middle of the third period and at the end Switzerland pulled netminder Gerber to go for the needed game-winner. USA then scored 4-3 but due to a bad move by an American forward the goal was ruled out fr an off-side.
The Swiss team failed to get the game-winner in time but in the overtime period Roman Wick fired a shot past Robert Esche after only 13 seconds.
