FISU Executive Board Attributes 2015 Winter Universiade to Granada, Spain
- FISU
University ice hockey will travel to Granada, Spain in 2015 as the Executive Board of FISU, the International University Sports Federation attributed the 2015 Winter Universiade to the Andaluzian city in the Sierra Nevada.
Spain, already twice a host for the Winter Universiade – in Jaca (1981 & 1995) - will welcome the University Games back in 2015 where the legendary Sierra Nevada will be the main setting. ‘Granada and the Sierra Nevada is a well known snow sports area’, Eduardo Valenzuela, Bid Director said. ‘Thanks to the 27th Winter Universiade we will be able to start developing the ice sports as well. This will make the region a complete winter sport hotbed.’
The southern part of Spain does indeed not have any ice rinks. ‘With only 18 ice rinks in the whole of Spain there is a lot room of growth for the ice sports in our country, Frank Gonzales, Vice President of the Spanish Ice Sports Federation and member of the IIHF Executive Board said. ‘By building two permanent ice rinks in Granada, ice hockey, skating and curling can start to grow in Andalucia. It will be a great legacy.’ Gonzalez is familiar with the FISU Games. In 1981 he was a player of Team Spain in Jaca and in 1995 he was a referee.
