Czech/Slovak All-star game
It was the first time in history that an All-star game was played between the
star players of the Czech Extraliga and the Slovak Extraliga. This year it has
been ten years that Czechoslovakia was separated in Czech Republic and Slovakia
and that was one of the reasons to organise an All-star game between these two
countries. Since 1996 the Czechs and Slovaks used to have an All-star game and
Skills competition between a selection from the east and one from the west of
the country, but from now on they will face each other every year. The event
took place in Pardubice on February 1st and almost 8000 spectators showed up at
the Duhova Arena, which was a big improvement compared to previous All-star
games. Next year the event will move to Bratislava, Slovakia.
As usual, the first line-up was chosen by fans, the second by sports journalists
and the third and fourth line by coaches. Both teams started playing very active,
but the first period was dominated by the goalies Adam Svoboda and Miroslav
Simonovic. They didn't allow any goals until the last two minutes of the first period.
The first goal for the Czechs was, ironically enough, scored by a Slovak, Marek Uram.
The first goal for Team Slovakia was scored five seconds before the end of the
first period by Arne Krotak, 31-year-old player of HC Kosice. In the second
period the goalies had less luck. In five minutes five goals were scored. As
usual, there was a goalie change in the 10th minute of the second period and
Roman Malek and Karol Kristan played the remainder of the game. In the end Team
Czech Republic built up a 2-goal lead and won the game 7-5. Although some Czechs
played for Team Slovakia and some Slovaks for the Czech team, the only stranger
at this game was Normund Sejejs, player at Dulka Trencin and native of Latvia.
Instead of previous games, this year's game had just a small Skills competition
and was held on the same day as the All-star game. Czech Republic and Slovakia
competed for Fastest skater, Longest shot and Best goalie.
