Russian All Star Game
The Russian All Star Game was played December 23rd, the day after the Baltica Brewery Cup ended; so many players arrived directly from Moscow. The hockey crazy town Omsk hosted the third ever Russian All Star Game. As usual it was played by a selection from the east and one from the west of Russia. The East selection was dominated by players from the home team, Avangard, while eight of the players in the West team came from Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
A skills competition with seven events was held prior to the game. Sergei Zinoviev won the opening event - skating, and showed the team from west the way to a comfortable 5-2 win.
Maksim Sushinsky has missed a lot of league games due to injury this season but this night he was outstanding. His three goals helped the East team to win 8-4. Aleksandr Selivanov also scored a hat trick. An interesting rule was applied in this game. Instead of two minutes penalties, penalty shots were handed out. The Team West defenseman Turkovsky was the only player to score on a penalty shot while Razin, Kovalenko and Sushinsky missed their chances.
It took almost 15 minutes before the first goal of the game was scored but after that two more came rather quickly and East were up 3-0 after the first period. West got a little closer in the second period and the score was 5-3 after two. Turkovsky's penalty shot made it 5-4 and the game was very much alive but two goals from Selivanov secured the win for East. Sushinsky also made it 8-4 to delight the home crowd.
